What is a Health and Safety Management System?
A health and safety management system (HSMS) is a structured approach that organizations use to identify, assess, and control workplace hazards, ensuring the safety and well-being of employees.
An HSMS includes policies, procedures, and practices for preventing accidents, promoting a safe work environment, and complying with Federal and Provincial regulations. Key elements typically include risk assessment, employee training, incident reporting, emergency preparedness, and continuous improvement.
A strong HSMS helps reduce workplace injuries, improves productivity, and fosters a culture of safety.
Achieving COR and SECOR Certification
A COR/SECOR is a certificate of recognition shows that the employers health and safety management system (HSMS) has been evaluated by a certified auditor and meets provincial standards. These standards are established by occupational health and safety.
What are the benefits of Having COR and SECOR and Why Should you Consider it?
There are many benefits to holding a safety certification.
- Demonstrates that, as a responsible employer, you have an effective system in place to protect your employees.
- Provides a boost to employee morale and improves engagement and efficiency.
- Increasingly required when bidding for contracts.
- Enhances a company’s reputation within its industry.
- Reduces cost for workplace incidents.
- Lowers WCB – (depending on the certifying partner you are with).
What is SECOR?
SECOR is a health and safety certification that is specifically for companies with 10 employees or less. The company would be required to hold principles of health and safety management and industry specific safety training such as CSTS OR ESTS
The audit would consist of the employee that holds the principles of health and safety management certificate to complete an evaluation tool that evaluates the 10 elements in health and safety management system. The evaluation is then sent to the certifying partner (example ACSA, ATA) with the documentation required for them to complete an audit that will review your health and safety management system.
What is COR?
COR is health safety certification that requires an auditor from outside the company to audit the company’s HSMS.
It would consist of employee interviews, site observations and documentation review. The information obtained would be entered into an online auditing system and reviewed by the certifying partner.
Both COR and SECOR have a three-year auditing cycle. The first year would be a certification audit or evaluation, the second and third years would be a maintenance audits or evaluation. The fourth year the cycle restarts again with recertification.
